Starting in New Delhi and then deciding where to go

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Some guys are asking me - what are your plans in India and where do you want to go there.

My plans in India are exploring the country and getting in contact with another culture.

I am planning three different routes. I do not have a lot of time - there are 3 weeks left. It’s OK and I know, that even within three weeks it is possible to see and visit a lot. I have got some plans and possibilities, but will decide on the fly, where to go and what’s the best.

What I am planning is to start in New Delhi. Go to Agra and Jaipur. I will go there by bus and train. The weather in India is very hot at the moment and it is short before the raining-season (is starting in June).

Route 1: If it is not too hot, public transport is OK and it is possible to travel “fast”, I will choose Route 1 and  go further into the south: Ahmedabad, Bombay, Goa.

Route 2: If public transport is OK and the weather is too hot, I will check the East: Kolkata or Darjeeling with a wonderful view to the Himalaya.

Route 3 I am going to choose, if I decide to focus on nature and the north and if I notice, that a big tour is getting too exhausted.

Lets see…

Sugarmelon. India napolis. Possible route.

Why am I writing a blog…

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Maybe it is interesting for some of you, getting to know, why I am writing this blog.

I am often getting asked - “Dieter, we will read your journey in a blog?” It’s also a question, I am asking myself very often. Some say, “Hej, it’s your holiday, and you are still working?”

Sharing, new people, new culture and new technologies

One big thing is sharing enthusiasm, passion and getting in contact with new and interested people - sharing experiences with others and let all of them joining and participating. Or simply staying in contact. By writing a blog, by opening myself, by asking questions, by writing my experiences, I want get feedback and new inputs from others. I want to motivate you, getting in contact with the world, see, whats happening outside, getting in contact with new culture and bringing back new experiences.

Another thing is playing with new possibilities and technologies. It is interesting to see, how communication is changing. It has been a postcard not a long time ago, which took two or three weeks from a foreign destination to tell your friends how you are doing. Now it’s a blog. And your message, feelings, questions and greetings are online and shared within minutes.

Experiences with new technology: Geotagging

In my foreign journeys, I used f.e. Geotagging and -positioning and a special GPS-system. I was interested in using this technology and finding out the benefit. It was interesting, sitting at home after the trip, and analyzing all of the GPS-positions and routes on Google Maps and Google Earth where we have been. It was amazing getting a better understanding for the country, for the surrounding villages and cities by just simply getting the bird-view. To follow the roads, the streets, the rivers and getting answers to the questions I had during the trip. To see, what’s next to Angkor Wat, to see, where we have been exactly with our Mekong-boat-trip, etc.

Why India?

Good question. I was already planning my current holidays in October 2007 and wanted to visit the Philippines. I changed these plans, as I thought, I have already been in SEA twice in 2007 and had the requirement seeing something different. Next destination was Peru, followed by Chile. I read both Lonely Planets Chile and Peru - wonderful countries - and decided, that this destination will be done another times.

Then in spring 2008 I got in contact with a working colleague. She comes from India, is working in the Netherlands and it was interesting to see her doing things, talking and discussing. This made me interesting and bought some literature about India. It was so fascinating, that I decided, that India is going to be my next destination.

Trying to get in contact with a working-colleague - Pooja S. She comes from India, works in the Netherlands within the same organization at the same company as I do.
